Ides of March Minus 13
See my previous ARMAGEDDON CHOSEN, which I wrote Feb 28, 2004.
Start the Countdown.
Concession
Nothing in the March 2 election went my way. Nothing at all.
Senator Kerry appears to be the Democratic nominee. Californians, or at least the few who voted, lined up with Ahnold, that's Gov Schwarzenegger. So did almost all of California's elected Democrats, including (surprise!) Senator Boxer.
Treasurer Phil Angelides, who opposed the Governor's propositions, said:
"Balancing the budget has just begun ... Essentially, the governor's approach would put all the burden of balancing the budget on the backs of children and working people." (Sacramento Bee, 3/3/2004)
Former Gov Wilson, the eminence gris of the Schwarzenegger Administration,
... called the performance of Propositions 57 and 58 a "great personal victory" for Schwarzenegger. (Sacramento Bee, 3/3/2004)
With few exceptions, California Democrats have become Republicans. As the March 3 Sacramento Bee put it:
"Election night marked a victory for business interests that opposed Proposition 56 and defeat for the state employee unions and other Democratic interests that supported it."
Thus it is. The people have spoken. For me, the 2004 elections are over.
Unmitigated Class Warfare
I am not prevented, however, from saying "the people" have declared war on the the poor, the underclass - the bottom third or so of the population.
The electorate is composed of the top half or so of the population, as measured by wealth. This electorate is disproportionately conservative, Republican, and utterly disinterested in the plight of the less well off. When the actual condition of the working class and the poor is made public, this same dominant group yells "class warfare" loudly and often.
This is what I will call the Atwater-Gingrich maneuver: turn everything upside down, inside out. Repeat it often enough, and drown out any protest. Laugh off and/or demonize the opposition. This makes your views the truth. This strategy is especially effective in the hands of the moneyed classes.
The reality of Tuesday's election in California is that those of us who are poor - and I am one of those - or near the bottom of the workplace totem pole will pay higher taxes, receive fewer services and generally find more barriers erected against self-improvement.
California's voters say they dislike George W Bush. Every poll shows the President is unpopular here. I cannot understand it. A few months ago, they summarily threw out the Democratic incumbent and installed Republican Schwarzenegger. Yesterday, they voted for George Bush's policies and methods (borrow and give it to the rich) as applied to California.
Worse, almost all of the "Democrats" went along with this misdirection and piracy of the public treasury and interests.
That's why what is happening is unmitigated class warfare, so that government of the rich, by the rich and for the rich shall dominate this Earth. We are on our way back to the Bourbons, the status quo ante.
The End
So, now the whole apparatus trundles its way to its fate. That's an ominous word: 'fate,' not destiny. In the early 60s, there was a book, JUGGERNAUT, THE WARFARE STATE, and after that THE NEW ROMANS.
I again quote from myself (November, 2002):
I keep repeating what the conservative, existentialist philosopher Georges Santillana said: "Those who do not learn from history are condemned to repeat it." Slog on, Sisyphus.
If not in my lifetime, almost certainly in the lifetime of our children, the inevitable consequences of ignorant and selfish choices will become manifest. Maybe it is a good thing for me: "Apres moi, le deluge."
They always scorn prophets.
